A Christian Doctor
Christopher Kolker MD
If you are reading this, you understand that faith and medicine are both essential components of true healing. We all seek to be made whole again, and that guidance must come from our Lord and Savior. While advances in science enable us to treat more disorders than ever before, we know that complete healing—of both body and soul—is only possible through the divine.
That’s why finding a doctor rooted in faith becomes crucial to real healing. In a society where faith often takes a back seat to science, how can we be sure that our doctor recognizes the transformative power of faith in Jesus Christ?
We pray, and we seek: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7. Even when doctors hesitate to share their faith, we can see signs of practitioners’ genuine faith, guiding us toward true healing.
Below is what every Christian doctor should strive to do to more fully fulfill the Hippocratic Oath:
1. Recognize the primacy of our Spiritual walk with Jesus Christ. Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6.
2. Fully commit to the sanctity of life, recognizing that we are all made in the image of God. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10.
3. Be aware that the Holy Spirit dwells in each of us. Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 1 Corinthians 3:16.
4. Believe that each person, regardless of race, color, creed, religion, sex, background, capabilities, or any other characteristic, is a miracle of creation and worthy of care. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28.
5. Know and practice the belief that every person deserves to be heard. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 1 John 5:14.
6. Commit to putting in time and energy to best treat each patient. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 1 Peter 4:10-11.
7. Practice lifelong learning of the art of medicine to the best of their ability. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:23-4.
Wherever you find yourself, always remember the words of Paul to the Philippians:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (4:6-7).
May the Lord bless and keep you!
